Job Description

The Califano Lab in the Department of Systems Biology at Columbia University is seeking exceptionally qualified candidates for multiple Postdoctoral Research Scientist (Experimental) positions. Successful candidates will have extensive wet-bench and single cell technology development expertise in to be involved in highly competitive research leading to highly innovative, high-impact publications. The ideal candidates shall have outstanding scientific credentials, including first-author publications and conference presentations relevant to the field of single cell biology. Candidates possessing a strong background in single-cell technology development and methodologies-such as CROP-Seq, perturb-Seq, ATAC-Seq, CITE-Seq and single cell library generation and profiling-combined with expertise in disciplines such as cell and molecular biology, immunology, genetics, biochemistry and related sciences will be especially well suited. Familiarity with computational biology approaches would be a useful addition but is not needed to fulfill the requirements for this position, as appropriate training will be provided by the lab. The optimal candidate would also have significant experience and publications in systems biology, including familiarity with regulatory/signaling networks and spatial representation of cellular transcripts and proteins, to elucidate the molecular determinants of specific cellular phenotypes and associated mechanisms in cancer.

Integration of quantitative analysis, high-throughput experimentation, and technology development is the hallmark of the Department of Systems Biology at Columbia, especially in the Califano lab. As such, the Postdoctoral Research Scientist will work collaboratively on multidisciplinary teams to develop or improve single-cell methodologies for the analysis of cell regulatory and signaling networks; use models to test how the genomic and epigenomic diversity affect pathophysiologic phenotypes, including in the context of development and cancer; develop new methodologies and technologies for the elucidation of biological mechanisms using systems biology approaches; and testing the interaction between the Master Regulator driven regulatory and signaling logic of the cell and small molecule inhibitors.

The candidate will be expected to participate in a highly collegial lab environment, training other lab members based on their expertise, participate in team science research, and become successful in writing successful grant proposals. The Califano lab has an outstanding record of placement for its former members ranging from academic position, including department chairs, to leading positions in industry, from group leader to chief scientific officer.

  • PhD in one of the following disciplines: molecular biology, immunology, genetics, epigenetics, biochemistry, or related science is required.
  • Additional work-related experience will be a plus.
  • A proven first-author publication track record is required to be considered for this position.
  • Familiarity with gene cloning, CRISP-mediated mutation, silencing, and over-expression, library preparation for single cell molecular profiling, and single cell CRISPR and CRISPRi/a -mediated gene manipulation is a must for this position.
  • At least passing familiarity with large genomic data set processing and with a variety of methodologies to dissect molecular interactions in the cell would be preferred.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
