Position Summary

Privacy Specialist plays a key role in compliance with HIPAA and other applicable state and federal laws. The Privacy Specialist is responsible for investigations, audits, trainings and various reviews to ensure compliance with applicable privacy regulations for Stony Brook's Organized Health Care Arrangement (SBOHCA). The covered entities participating in SBOHCA include Stony Brook University Hospital's (SBUHs), the University Faculty Practice Corporations (UFPCs), SB Community Medical, P.C. (SBCM), Meeting House Lane Medical Practice, P.C., the Long Island State Veterans Home (LISVH) and several academic health professional schools of Stony Brook University including the School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Health Technology and Management, and School of Social Welfare; their employees and contracted professionals and students; and the voluntary members of the SBUH Medical Staff. The covered entities which comprise the SBOHCA are in numerous locations throughout the greater New York area.

Duties of a Privacy Specialist may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Conduct HIPAA privacy investigations in response to all reports or alerts of suspected or known privacy violations, ensure all appropriate mitigation efforts and corrective actions are implemented.
  • Conduct a breach risk assessment for all impermissible access, use and disclosures involving unsecured protected health information (PHI) for breach determination.
  • Assist with making breach notifications when needed.
  • Maintain all records and supporting documentation for investigations and breach risk assessments including but not limited to mitigation actions, corrective actions, communications, notifications and instances when HIPAA allegations are unsubstantiated including writing letters to reporters.
  • Accept, monitor and respond to privacy and compliance helpline and phone requests or concerns from all individuals and workforce members regarding privacy.
  • Conduct on-site HIPAA Rounding audits and other audits and monitoring projects contained in annual privacy work plans.
  • Assist with the monitoring and tracking of Business Associate Agreements.
  • Partner and collaborate with internal departments and operational leaders that represent organizational privacy interests including but not limited to Health Information Management, General Counsel/Hospital Counsel, Patient Access, and Faculty Practices.
  • Assist Privacy Officer to develop, maintain and provide training to include new employee orientation, annual and periodic training and reminders on health information privacy requirements and policies and procedures.
  • Assist with the coordination of privacy-related research matters.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • At least three years of professional experience in a healthcare or research related position (e.g., corporate compliance, health information management, healthcare administration, healthcare operations, research) or of direct experience in HIPAA compliance.
  • Demonstrated skills in collaboration, teamwork and problem-solving.
  • Strong communication skills regarding privacy with the ability to understand broad enterprise risks in a complex health system.
  • Excellent verbal, listening, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to present complex information clearly and thoroughly.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • High level of personal integrity, as well as the ability to professionally handle confidential matters, and show an appropriate level of judgement and maturity.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive interpersonal relationships.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred:

  • Master's Degree
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience with state and federal information privacy, confidentiality, security, and breach notification laws and privacy in research settings.
  • Health Care Compliance Certification preferred such as Certified in Health Care Privacy Compliance (CHPC), Certified Health Care Compliance Professional (CHC) or Certified in Health Care Research Compliance (CHRC).
  • Prior privacy experience within an academic healthcare hybrid entity.

  • Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

*The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as - $90000-$100000.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
